You’ve applied for a few jobs and suddenly your phone rings… could this be a recruiter for one of the jobs?
Should you pick up?
If you do.. the conversation will go this way.
Recruiter: Hi it’s Paul from ImTalkin2FastForU2Understand, I’m calling about the job you’ve applied for. Is it a good time to talk?
You: (Paul from where? I’m in the middle of something and don’t remember all the jobs I’ve applied for…) Yes, of course.
And so it begins, the recruiter launches into a full on phone screening you’re not prepared for… And, it goes badly.
So let me ask you again.
Should you pick up?
Absolutely not!
And I’ve got 3 very good reasons why you should let the phone ring:
- They want to talk to you
Your application has been shortlisted, it means that your potential new employer wants to find out more about you.
They are interested!
I promise you, they will not disqualify you for not answering the phone.
Instead, they will leave you a message or send you an email asking for you to return their call or schedule some time to talk.
- You have to be in the right zone
Answering an important call while you’re driving, at the park with your kids or in the middle of preparing a presentation for work is counterproductive.
You need to be focused on the conversation you’re having with the recruiter.
Make sure you make the call in a quiet place where you won’t be disturbed, with your CV in front of you and the ability to take notes.
- You need to prepare
If you’ve actively looking for a new role, do you even remember all the jobs you’ve applied for?
Before you launch into a phone screening you need time to remind yourself of the position, the company and why you think it’s a good match for you.
You also need to prepare some questions that will help you decide if you want to continue with your application. Have a look here for some epic questions to ask in a phone interview.
I think you’re ready…
Good luck!
